5 POWERFUL Mentalism Tricks You Can Perform

These Are My 5 GO-TO Mentalism Tricks With Secrets revealed..
They go in ORDER of difficulty, so when you get to number 5, you’ll be PRO at this!
Before we get started, here’s a few secrets on performing POWERFUL Mentalism Tricks.
The REAL SECRET to performing Mentalism is in your performance..
- The showmanship is everything – You should approach each of these effects as “experiments with your audience members.
- Never say you are going to do a “trick” – Tell them that you “want to try something” and you’re not sure if’s going to work but it would be cool if it does work (of course it ALWAYS works!).
This will put their guard down and make them instantly less skeptical.
“If you present Mentalism Tricks as a “Magic Trick”
they are set up to try and catch you out
and look for any suspicious moves“
- The more of your own personality you can put into the performance – the better.. The idea is that you want to “be yourself” but a slightly exaggerated version of yourself.
- If you want to perform a Mentalism Trick in a casual setting such as in a bar or at a friends house, you must try to keep calm and casual and don’t suddenly jump into a different character!
That’s Enough Pre-show Talk!
Let’s Get Down To My 5 Go-To Mentalism Tricks…
#1: Which Hand?
THE EFFECT:
While your back is turned, you ask a spectator to hold a coin to their head for 30 seconds with either hand and focus their energy into the coin..
When you turn around you can INSTANTLY tell them which hand is holding the coin!
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 1/5
THE SECRET:
When you turn around, ask the spectator to hold both fists out in front of them without revealing which hand the coin is in..
All you do is simply look at which hand is lighter in color!
The hand that has been held up to his head will have less blood in it as he has been holding it there for 30 seconds and the blood runs out of the hand!
PRO TIP: For dramatic effect you could also do this blindfolded!
#2: Make An Impression
THE EFFECT:
You hand someone a pad of paper and a pen and ask them to draw a large object – Without you seeing.
You are then able to REPRODUCE the exact same drawing using the power of your mind.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 2/5
THE SECRET:
This Mentalism Trick is super powerful and yet super EASY.
When the spectator has drawn the object on the pad, ask them to tear the paper off and hand you the pad and pen.
All you need to do is see the impression that the pen has left on the second page!
Now draw the same object but not exactly the same as that would be too obvious! Make it a different size and maybe add your own personal touch to the object.
PRO TIP: If you can’t see the impression very well, try reflecting the page off of natural light, if that fails, try using a pencil or pen where they need to push harder.
#3: The 3 Card Revelation!
THE EFFECT:
You borrow a pack of shuffled playing cards at a friends house and ask them to cut the cards into 3 piles..
You can name EVERY card on the top of each pile!
You do not need any trick playing cards!
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 3/5
THE SECRET:
You must secretly know the top card before you begin the performance.
You can do this easily by asking the spectator to shuffle the cards, once they have been shuffled, spread the cards face up on the table to show they are fully shuffled.
As you do this, just glimpse at the top card and make a mental note of it.
For instructional purposes let’s say it’s the 3 of Hearts but it doesn’t matter what card it is, just make sure you remember it!
Now what you do is put the cards face down on the table and ask the spectator to cut the cards equally into 3 piles.
Keep an eye on where the top of the pack ends up (the pile with the 3 of hearts).
Now what you do is point to any of the 2 piles (which doesn’t contain the 3 of hearts) and announce..
“This is the 3 of hearts!”
You pick this card up (making sure the spectator does not see what it is) and look at it and smile as if you got it right.
You then make a mental note of this card and put it face down on the table.
(let’s say it was the Queen of spades)
You then point to the other pile that DOESN’T contain your remembered card (in this case the 3 of hearts) and announce..
“This is the Queen of Spades!”
Of course, at this stage you’re just announcing the card you just previously looked at.
Pick this top card up, look at it and smile as if you got it right.
Now make a mental note of this card and put it face down on top of your other card on the table.
(let’s say this card was the 4 of Diamonds)
Now you point to the final pile (the one with the original 3 of Hearts) and announce..
“This final card is the 4 of Diamonds!”
And again you are just naming the card previously looked at.
You now dramatically turn the 3 cards over on the table and reveal that they are ALL CORRECT!
PRO TIP: This one of my favorite Mentalism Tricks.
It might sound complicated at first but the method is very simple.
It’s a very useful technique in Mentalism called the “the one-ahead principle”.
You are just simply one ahead – whatever card you name was the one you just looked at.
It’s genius and should be presented as if you are really struggling to “read the cards” – the more showmanship you put into it – the greater effect it will have.
#4: The Center Tear Mentalism Trick
THE EFFECT:
A spectator is asked to write a 3 digit number inside a circle on a piece of paper without you seeing..
You then tear this piece of paper up and BURN it..
You then REVEAL the number they have written down!
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 4/5
THE SECRET:
This is one of those Mentalism Tricks that is great to perform in the spare of the moment.
STEP 1: All you need is a square piece of paper and a pen.
(A Post-it note works perfectly)
Fold this piece of paper into quarters, folding it in half first, then in half again.
Now open the paper up and draw a circle in the center of the piece of paper – around the size of a half dollar coin.
STEP 2: Now give the pen and paper to your spectator and ask them to write any 3 digit number in the circle and fold the paper up so you can’t see what they have written.
Ask them to hand you the paper and then what you do is dramatically tear it in half – and then in half again.
STEP 3: As you stack the pieces, just keep track of where the center piece is – you can do this easily with a couple of practice runs.
When you throw the pieces on the table, but secretly hold back the center piece with your thumb.
You can now burn the remaining pieces to emphasize the fact that you could never see what they have written.
Later on when no-one is looking, or under the table – open up the piece you have and it will all be in-tact with their number!
You can then reveal the number in any dramatic fashion you like!
The way this works is that anything written inside the circle will not get torn due to the way it is folded and torn.
PRO TIP: you don’t have to limit this to numbers, you can use names, places etc. just be aware that everyone’s handwriting is different and not always clear!
#5: A Feat Of Memory
THE EFFECT:
You ask someone to pass you 2 books from THEIR bookshelf.
You take one of the books and announce that you are going to memorize it in under 60 seconds…
You flick through the pages, whilst concentrating hard as if you are memorizing every word.
You close this book and give it to the spectator.
Using the other book, you flick through and ask them to stop at anytime.
You then call out the page number they have stopped at and ask them to open their book and look at the first word on that page.
From “Memory” you reveal the word!
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 5/5
THE SECRET:
This effect is not technically difficult, however, the presentation is important and vital to the performance.
STEP 1: Borrow 2 books and say that you have a photographic memory.
Take one of the books and flick through the pages pretending to remember every single word in the book.
As you do this, just remember any page number and the first word on that page.
(make sure it’s an interesting word and not something like: to, the or of!)
Now place this book on the table and pick up the other book.
STEP 2: Tell the spectator that you are going to flick through the pages with your thumb and you want her to call “STOP” at anytime.
When she says stop, just stop flicking through the pages.
You then look at this page and call out the number you previously remembered from the other book.
You need to do this casually and don’t make a big deal out of it as you do not want to draw attention to this “miss calling” of the page number.
STEP 3: Now ask her to pick up the book that you have memorized and go to that exact page in the book and without you seeing, look at the first word on that page number then close the book.
You now stare deeply into her eyes as if you are reading her mind…
Then you slowly reveal the word she is thinking of!
PRO TIP: This might sound too obvious and you might think that she won’t believe when you “miss call the page number”.
But I have performed this hundreds of times and it’s never been questioned.
You need to do it very openly and before they can focus on the page number just close the book and move on to the next stage.
This is a very powerful Mentalism trick and should be presented well for the best impact.
